How To Determine Skid Steer Tire Size?
Do you ever get the “Deer in the headlights” look whenever you think about replacing your skid steer tires? You look at all the numbers on the sidewall if you can still see them, and find them confusing? Let me explain to you what all those numbers mean.
There are usually 3 numbers, for example, 27x10.5 -15. The first number is the height / The second number is the section width / The third number is the Rim (wheel size). In this case of the example the tire height is 27”, the section width is 10.5”, and the diameter of the rim is 15”.
So ok what if there are only 2 numbers, for example, 10 x 16.5.or 12 x 16.5. This is a little trickier. The last number is always the Rim (wheel) size. In such a case you can estimate the height of the tire by multiplying the section width x 2 and adding the rim size. This isn’t always accurate but will give you a good idea of what to expect.
There are other factors to consider when choosing a tire including; load rating, Ply rating and load index. These are generally determined by the size and operating weight, and maximum load weight of your machine along with the application.
Hopefully, this has cleared a few things up regarding tire sizes and tracks. There is a method to the numbers. Don’t ever hesitate to call us here at (866) 315-3134 for information. We are always happy to give you the best advice available to us.
Choosing The Right Skid Steer Tire
There are basically two different types of skid steer tires to consider:
- Flat Proof (Solids)
- Pneumatic (Air-filled)
What are some things to consider? Well, budget usually comes to mind first. Pneumatic tires are usually more affordable. But the most important consideration is your application and the terrain.
Solid Skid Steer Tires
These tires do not have inner tubes like a traditional or a standard tire, Thus cannot be punctured or are at risk for air leaks. So if you are in the recycling industry, construction zones, demolition, or waste management, you want to consider solid tires. These tires do come in several styles, and are usually sold as tires and wheels assembled.
Air-Filled or Pneumatic Skid Steer Tires
These tires work best on uneven or rough terrain, with a variety of tread designs and quality. It also provides a more comfortable ride. So again your intended use should be considered.
For example, If you are a landscaper and need to violate a customer’s lawn, you should consider a non-directional style tire which is a little more forgiving, and doesn’t have the deep chevron style tread design but has more surface. Or you can also consider using skid steer mats. Are you a snow contractor then review the skid steer snow tire option for your business.
When choosing a pneumatic tire you will also want to keep in mind the weight and size of your machine, with a consideration of the loads you expect to carry. We carry tires for just about any skid loader including Bobcat Tires, Case Skid Steer Tires, Cat Skid Steer Tires, and more.
